HMS Bounty Sinks Off NC Coast, 14 People Rescued, Two Possibly Missing.

Breaks my heart.  Bounty was built in the Lunenburg, Nova Scotia shipyard by the same hands that built Bluenose II.  I spent my summer-time college age working days about a few hundred feet from where these boats slid down the rails for their launch.  My dad took this picture sometime in the early 70s when Bounty was up for a port call to her birthplace.

Pray and hope all are found safe.

The loss of life is terribly sad, but the decision to get underway shall be questioned forever. (Bad call IMHO).
The link is to a monograph that, in part, explains why so many vessels were lost at sea during the Age of Sail. In part, “Even sailing at speeds of only a few knots in moderate seas, sailing ships were subjected to strong torsional (twisting) stresses,”. Image the stresses wrought by hurricane force wind and waves.
