BIG thanks. Mucho. Gargantuan.
Thanks for the sacrifices, the time, the dedication, the support and the love you have for this nation.
Thanks for eating sand in the desert or sweltering in the heat and humidity of South East Asia or freezing in Korea or saving the world in the early 1940’s.

I read the newspaper every morning, and in 2000 I was teaching Middle School Science. At that time the newspaper was filled every morning with the life story of a true hero of World War II, a man who generally led an ordinary life since returning from the war, who did some of the most extraordinary things for our country. Every day I read of a patriots who, because they understood they should, performed epic feats to save our world from totalitarianism. Many of those men, my neighbors, deserved a book, a movie, a play, to communicate to the world how they felt about their country and what they risked, and did to protect it.
I felt several things. The first was frustration that I wasn’t teaching History to allow me to pass on the lessons we should learn from their actions. The second was the sorrow that I was unable to illuminate they were not the only individuals in the service of my country, who did whatever was asked of them, by our country, to protect our freedoms.
The last was gratitude, to them, and those who have come since, in ‘peace’ and in war, that they were men and women of action, who did what was required, to ensure we have the freedoms promised by the Constitution.
Thank you all. You risked your life to protect mine.
